Teaching Persuasive Writing (NAPLAN)

Teaching Persuasion: Writing with Authority

The NAPLAN genre for 2011 is persuasion. With this type of writing, it is essential to get the interpersonals right, to write with authority. So, as the year draws to a close and planning begins in earnest for the new school year, discover some secrets of effective persuasive writing:

Half Day workshops:

  • Clarifying the persuasive genre: Why it’s really about writing exposition
  • Understanding your audience and the writer’s role
  • Using Mood (including questions, statements and commands)
  • Modality – the use of probability, obligation, certainty, inclination and usuality
  • Deploying the language of evaluation (the Appraisal system).

Full day workshops:

  • Everything in the half day workshops plus…
  • The oral-written continuum
  • The basics of exposition: whole text structure, PEEL structure for paragraphs, moving beyond generic recipes
  • Responding to stimulus: T-charts, concept maps and more

The workshops will include models and practical strategies, for example clever cloze (download example: Sample Clever Cloze), the modality continuum and ‘Writing Plan’. In addition, discover how extracts from narratives can be used very effectively for the teaching of persuasion; an example of this can be found here: Appraisal Elements in an Argument Embedded in a Narrative.

Audience: primary and secondary teachers
