Starting your 2017 planning?
Need help with literacy, especially improving reading and writing?
In 2017, I intend to offer the usual range of literacy help. However, a major focus emerging for schools is helping mid-range students lift their results. For example, how does a student 'stuck on a B' end up as an 'A' student? It is very clear that what is helping struggling students to pass is not working with the higher achieving students; in some cases those students appear to be falling back.
Over the past year, I have spent a great deal of time researching and developing ways to help these mid to high achieving students. The approach that I am taking does not involve ditching genre - as is being recommended by a number of people. The problem is NOT genres, but how we think about genres and how we teach them. Far too much emphasis is placed on the basic genres; more emphasis needs to be placed on using genres effectively in particular contexts, combining genres and using them metaphorically. This is the key to improvement and growth.
While I am continuing with student workshops where requested, my emphasis in 2017 will be on the direct training of teachers, especially through explicit modelling and coaching.
